The 99 is a song about making a choice to seek God at the start of the day. Seeking him early in the morning, putting away all other cares and longing after His presence.
The song begins by quoting Psalm 63: ''God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you.'' The lyrics speak of a desire to seek God early in the morning and to draw close to his presence. The context comes in the form a personal response to Luke 15 and the parable of the lost sheep, where the Shepherd decides it is important enough to leave the 99 sheep already in his care to look for the 1 sheep who has gone astray.
If this matters enough to the Shepherd, how much more should I be willing to leave behind anything that might keep me from him? Whether it is momentary tiredness or if I am in a season of wandering in a wilderness - I should seek after the God who is already seeking after me.
I have a strong conviction that we need to have a heart after God, and that this issue is so important - especially in this day and age where we are constantly distracted by so many other things. This has been my journey for 35 years. God always wants me to draw close and spend time alone with him. Yet there is so much to do every day. Perhaps you can identify.
